Take time this summer to visit your local library and find out what they offer for senior citizens, both book-wise, as well as book groups, activity groups and public computers. Libraries have always been my favorite place just to sit and read the papers in a comfortable, air-conditioned atmosphere.
Many libraries offer outreach services. In my hometown of Windham, the public library delivers materials to local senior housing centers each month, including New Marblehead Manor, Unity Gardens and Ledgewood Manor. Generally, deliveries are made on the first Tuesday of each month. The librarian selects an assortment of novels (both in regular print and large print) and movies for the enjoyment of the residents. She also will try and select specific titles or genres upon request. Those interested in requesting that items be sent for a specific resident at one of the centers that the library delivers to can contact Sally Bannen at 892-1908
Meanwhile, the Lakes Region Senior Center has a busy August schedule lined up. This group that started out a couple of years ago and has had a home in several places, is now settled in and ready to provide activities, information or just a place to visit with others at Little Falls Activity Center, 40 Acorn St., Gorham. For old timers, this is the former Little Falls School.
Monday, Aug 10, 10:30 a.m.: David Shikes, humorist. Shikes has enjoyed visiting senior centers for the last eight or nine years. He is a retired book salesman from Atkinson, N.H., and travels near and far to entertain seniors. As a book salesman he has visited Baxter Memorial Library in Gorham. Following the show will be the monthly luncheon at 11:30. A meal, dessert and beverage with celebration of the August birthdays is offered for a donation of $5 and everyone is invited to attend.
Wednesday, Aug 12 and 26, 10 a.m.: Memoir writing group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. For more information, call David at 892-5604.
Fridays at 10:30 a.m.: Art workshop. Do you paint pictures, sponge paint, stencil, paint on stones, draw, liquid embroidery? Bring your project to this workshop and join in exchanging ideas and enjoy learning from each other. For more information, call Lisette at 892-8014.
