Nomination papers for two seats on the South Portland City Council and three seats on the Board of Education will be available from the City Clerk’s office starting on Thursday, July 30.

All papers are due back no later than 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, for the November election, which also includes one representative from Cape Elizabeth or South Portland for the Portland Water District Board of Trustees.

The two seats up on the City Council are districts 3 and 4, which are occupied by Melissa Linscott and Mayor Linda Cohen respectively.

This week Cohen told the Current that she plans to run for re-election this fall.

The available seats on the school board are districts 3, 4, and 5, which are held by Richard Matthews, current board chairman, James Gilboy and Tappan Fitzgerald respectively.

John Brady is the local representative for the Portland Water District board.

All seats require 100 qualified signatures from registered voters. Voters may only sign nomination papers for one candidate per district for the City Council and the Board of Education seats. The clerk’s office recommends that candidates not wait until the deadline to turn in petitions because if there should be a problem there may not be enough time to correct it.

Contact the City Clerk’s Office at 767-7627 or smooney@southportland.org for more information.
