A motorcyclist was seriously injured Sunday evening when he crashed into a mailbox on Flying Point Road in Freeport. He was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland by LifeFlight helicopter.

Freeport police are investigating the cause of the crash, which was reported at 6:41 p.m. The name of the motorcycle operator was unavailable Sunday.

Sarah Woodard said she went outside her home after she heard “a very loud crash.” She found the motorcycle operator, who was wearing a helmet, lying in the road, semiconscious and moaning. His bike had hit the mailbox and landed in a ditch.

Woodard said the motorcyclist was heading from the direction of Brunswick toward downtown Freeport.

Emergency crews arrived a few minutes after Woodard called 911 and determined the victim’s injuries were serious enough to have him evacuated by helicopter.

The man’s condition was not available Sunday night.
