Lighthouse open for the weekend
The Spring Point Lighthouse in South Portland will be open for tours during the Fourth of July weekend, depending on the weather and sea conditions. The cost is $5 per person and the lighthouse will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. July 3-5.
Due to the steep ladders in the lighthouse, children must meet a height requirement of 51 inches to be admitted. Bare feet will not be permitted and visitors are discouraged from wearing flip-flop style shoes.
Visitors will also find an assortment of snacks, refreshments, and lighthouse-related gifts such as T-shirts, hats, books, and souvenirs available for purchase. All proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales go toward the maintenance and management of the lighthouse.

Audubon Center seeks volunteers?
Maine Audubon is looking for volunteers ages 14 and up to help with a variety of tasks at the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center.
Volunteers could help out with citizen science projects, such as bird monitoring in July and August, lend a hand in The Nature Store, including operating the register, organizing store merchandise, answering phone calls and greeting visitors, assist visitors with canoe rentals, lead groups of all ages on explorations through the marsh or help out with buildings and grounds maintenance projects.
In addition, the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center needs volunteers for one-day special events, such as Snowy Egret Day. No experience is necessary and the time commitment can fit with the volunteer’s schedule. Training will be provided. Contact Linda Woodard at 883-5100 or smac@maineaudubon.org to learn more or to volunteer.

For the past several weeks, staff members at the Scarborough Public Library have spotted a family of ducklings making their way across busy Route 114. The young ducks enjoy swimming in the flooded culvert along the east side of the road, but also like to hide in the cattails and reeds on the west side. After a few near misses a bit of collaboration between the library and Public Works resulted in a new, bright yellow caution sign warning drivers to slow down.Courtesy photo
