Westbrook officials condemned a large Brackett Street apartment building Thursday after multiple code issues were found, displacing 23 people, including 12 children.

City Administrator Jerre Bryant said Friday that an inspection of the building by the Westbrook Fire Department Thursday showed areas of exposed wires and no electricity. He said a resident notified the city of “sparking and shorting” of wires in the building.

“They were immediate hazards,” he said, adding that the building showed a variety of code violations.

Over the weekend, he said, the affected residents will be staying in area hotels, supported by the American Red Cross.

Bryant said the building’s landlord was notified Thursday, and said an electrician was scheduled to work on the property Friday.

“He’ll assess the situation and give an estimate on the scope, cost and timeline for repairs,” he said.

A call to Westbrook Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte was not returned Friday afternoon.
