On Saturday, June 27, at 7 p.m., the Royal River Chorus will perform their special blend of women’s barbershop harmony in a concert at the North Windham Union Church. Royal River consists of 35 women of varied backgrounds and professions, united by a love of singing and performing. Its members come from six counties in southern, central and mid-coast Maine. Under the direction of Wendi McPike, the chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, which has been entertaining audiences throughout southern Maine for almost 35 years.
This concert is the 25h in the “Music with a Mission” series sponsored by the North Windham Union Church. The church donates a portion of the proceeds to area nonprofits. The first 24 concerts have provided more than $21,000 for mission support to the church and other community organizations. The chorus has chosen to support the Windham Community Garden with the proceeds from this concert. The dedicated volunteers at the Windham Community Garden strive to grow, harvest and distribute high-quality organic produce for those in need, and to serve as a community-building and educational resource for all residents.
“We are excited to welcome the Royal River Chorus,” said Dr. Richard Nickerson, minister of music for NWUC. “Barbershop concerts have been very popular, and we are delighted to showcase the chorus and three of their quartets. The Royal River Chorus comes to us fresh off of their 2015 regional competition held last month in Springfield, Mass.”
Tickets will be sold at the door and are $12 for adults and $10 for students, children, and seniors. The box office opens at 6:15 p.m. and the doors will open at 6:30. The North Windham Union Church is located at 723 Roosevelt Trail in Windham. For more information, call 892-7149 or email MWAMconcerts@gmail.com.
