A WOUNDED BIRD on the side of the road in Durham owes some thanks to a helpful motorist. Arielle Leclerc of Durham was driving along Quaker Meeting House Road on Tuesday to take her children to a playground when she spotted a sea gull with an obvious injury to its wing, making it unable to fly. “There was this bird in the middle of the road with a broken wing,” said Leclerc. She believed the bird had been struck by a vehicle. The gull had been standing in the middle of the road, forcing other vehicles to drive around it, but was still able to move on its own two feet to the shoulder. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts, Leclerc was able to drape her jacket over the wounded bird and placed it in a box provided by passing motorist Richard Staples, also of Durham. Leclerc said she was taking the gull to Avian Haven Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center in Freedom. “I do have chickens, but I don’t know much about wild birds,” said Leclerc, who said she has been trained as a veterinary technician. “My big thing is kindness toward people and animals,” Leclerc said. “If you see something or someone hurt, you help. It doesn’t matter if it’s a sea gull. That’s how I feel and how I want to raise my kids.”
