A Newport couple has been found alive after they were reported missing following a weekend spent camping in Elliotsville, in northern Piscataquis County.

Michael Chapman, 40, and Kelli MacFarlin, 38, were reported missing at 3:45 p.m. Monday. The Maine Warden Service reported around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday that they had been found.

The pair was located on the Appalachian Trail near Big Wilson Stream about two miles away from their campsite at Little Wilson Falls. The two became lost when they followed the wrong trail back to their vehicles, the Maine Warden Service said in a press release.

They had been last seen Monday around noon packing up camp and moving supplies to a vehicle, according to Cpl. John MacDonald.

Monday’s search included both ground and aircraft, according to MacDonald, and continued until dark. The search picked up Tuesday at dawn, according to the release.

Assisting in search efforts were the Maine Forest Service, Monson fire Department, and the Maine Army National Guard Lakota helicopter out of Bangor.

Elliotsville, a township, is northeast of Monson, and bordered by the Appalachian Trail.
