Meetings

The Regional School Unit 5 budget meeting is Wednesday, May 27, at 6:30 p.m., at Freeport High School Gym. This meeting is for the public to review and make recommendations to the RSU 5 board on how much the towns would like to spend for the public education budget.

The Durham Board of Selectmen will meet Tuesday, June 2, 16 and 30, at 6:30 p.m., in the Durham Town Office.

Masons hosting bean supper

The Durham Masonic Lodge, 663 Royalsborough Road (Route 136) will host a bean supper Saturday, June 13, from 4:30-6 p.m. On the menu are baked beans, chop suey, hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, bread, pickles and homemade pies.

The prices are $7.50, $3 for children ages 5-12 and free for children under 5.

Historic commission seeks associate members

The Durham Historic District Commission is looking for associate members. For those interested, applications are available at the Durham Town Office. For more information, call the town office, 353-2561.

Paving under way

Crews are paving Route 125 at the Freeport-Durham town line. Paving will extend 2.78 miles to the Soper Road intersection. It is anticipated all work will be completed by the first week of June. The paving operation takes place Monday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Motorists should expect slight delays when traveling through the work zone that will be controlled by flaggers.

Glidden Excavating and Paving Inc. of Gorham is performing the $659,000 project.

Durham Night at the Sea Dogs

On Friday, June 5, join friends and neighbors at Hadlock Field for a night of fun as the Portland Sea Dogs take on the Bowie Baysox. The game starts at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game are $5, with part of the proceeds going to support Durham Youth Baseball. Road-Ride-Riddle fundraiser June 6

Road-Ride-Riddle, a fundraiser for the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach Food Pantry, is Saturday, June 6, rain or shine, starting at the Durham Congregational Church,

773 Royalsborough Road, corner of routes 9 and 136. Registration is from 9:30-10:15 a.m. The fee is $10 or 10 non-perishable food items. Kids under 12 are half price.

Participants take a self-guided ride through Durham, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls and Bowdoin, the towns served by the food pantry. Road-Ride-Riddle is to be solved by the following designated route, where the answers to three questions can be found. The ride will end at the food pantry, located at the MTM Center, School Street (next to the United Methodist Church), in Lisbon Falls, where tours of the facility, free refreshments, and a wide range of prizes will be drawn by participants who have completed the three questions and have entered their names for the drawing starting at 11:45 a.m. Participants must be present to have their names drawn. Receives degree

A Durham resident was among those who received degrees at graduation from the University of Maine at Farmington on May 16. Nathaniel Fritts received a bachelor’s of fine arts in creative writing.

Kindergarten, pre-K registration

Durham Community School kindergarten registration is now available for children who were born before or on Oct. 15, 2015. Online registration can be found at dcs.rsu5.org.

The school is also registering pre-kindergarten students for the 2015-16 school year. The Durham Community School is anticipating a pre-K program designed to prepare students with the basic skills needed to be successful in kindergarten. To be eligible for this program, children must be 4 years old on or before Oct. 15 and reside in Durham. The pre-K program is a partial week, full-day program that follows the RSU 5 school calendar. The program operates in two sessions, a Monday, Wednesday and Friday session, as well as a Tuesday, Thursday session. To find out more about pre-K, see dcs.rsu5.org or call the school at 353-9333.

Cribbage, couponing

The Durham Eureka Community Center, corner of Route 9 and Route 136, hosts cribbage every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Couponing for the Community meets at the Community Center two Wednesdays each month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The next meeting is May 27. It is a chance to learn couponing basics including where/how to find and collect coupons; how to organize them; and how to begin using them. Pat Provost heads this project with the hopes that some of the skills acquired will be used to give back to the community by helping families in need. Anyone who already uses coupons or would like to know or learn about ways to coupon is welcome. Those who want more information can call Pat at 212-5156.

Late fee for dog licenses

Dog registration regular fees are $6 for altered dogs and $11 for unaltered dogs. Proof of rabies and first time for neutered or spaying will need to be seen by the registering clerk. This is once-a-year registration. A $25 late fee per dog will now be added to the regular fee. For more information call Town Clerk Shannon Plourde at 353-2561, ext. 11.

Food pantry

The Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (LACO) food pantry, which serves the towns of Durham, Bowdoin, and Lisbon Falls, is open Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon and Saturday from 8-10 a.m. The LACO Food Pantry is located at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street, Lisbon Falls. The parking lot is behind the Lisbon United Methodist Church, off Berry Avenue. There is also a free clothing bank. Girl Scout Troop 72, sixth-graders at Durham Community School, walked the Durham Memorial Day parade route on Sunday, May 17, and picked up trash. The girls picked up two huge bags.
