Seven towns have sent firefighting crews to the York County Jail in Alfred to investigate a report of a hazardous-materials spill.

A dispatcher for the York County Communications Center said authorities received a report around 10 p.m. Monday of smoke coming from the jail’s laundry area. The dispatcher said there does not appear to be any fire, only the smell of bleach that may have been spilled in the facility’s laundry room.

The severity of the spill was not known at 10:30 p.m.
