‘DownEast Dickering’
Whatever “DownEast Dickering,” had, people want it back. Since new episodes stopped airing in January, Mainers have started a “Bring Back DownEast Dickering” campaign that includes a Facebook page with more than 6,600 “likes,” as well as public events designed to bring attention the show.
The next public event is a meet-and-greet with 15 cast members of the reality show from 1-3 p.m. May 17 at America’s Mattress in Windham. For more information, go to Bring Back DownEast Dickering on Facebook.
Toby’s Dream Fundraising Dinner
A roast pork dinner in honor of Toby’s Dream will be held Saturday, May 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center behind the Windham Mall. (Follow signs along Veterans Memorial Drive beside Friendly’s.)
The dinner is a fundraiser for a repaving project at the vets center eyed by the late Windham businessman and Iraq War veteran Toby Pennels. The dinner includes roasted pork loin, gravy, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, roll, butter, coffee, tea and brownie ice cream sundae. $10 per person.
Mother’s Day Brunch
Windham Knight of Columbus will hold a Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 10, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (or until they sell out). The brunch will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 919 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302); $6 per person includes homemade pancakes, bacon and sausages, fruit salad, fresh donuts from The Village Bake Shop in Raymond; coffee, tea and juice. Meals are available to go. Tickets are available at the door.
Legislators at Patman’s
Sen. Bill Diamond and state Reps. Mark Bryant and Patrick Corey will be at Patman’s Redemption Center and Convenience Store located on Route 115 in North Windham on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m.-noon to meet the public, answer questions and listen to concerns regarding issues being debated in the state Legislature. Store owner Craig Thorne invited the three Windham legislators to be at his store to give his customers an opportunity to discuss issues and find out what’s going on in the Legislature. All are encouraged to stop by to say hello and give an opinion.
Democrats Meet
The Windham Dems will hold its regular meeting Monday, May 11, from 7-8 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. All Democrats are welcome and encouraged to attend. Now is the time to start planning for the 2016 elections.
Bingo at Veterans Center
You are invited to play Bingo provided by Standish Memorial Post 128 at the Windham Veterans Center. The fifth season starts in May and continues through October on every Tuesday. Doors are open at 4 p.m. and the Early Bird game starts at 6:10 p.m., with the regular games starting at 6:30 p.m. There are 14 regular games besides the Early Bird game plus the Winner Take All game. Pull Tabs are also available. Partake of refreshments, soft drinks and coffee for sale by the Windham Field-Allen Post 148 Auxiliary. Enjoy a relaxing night knowing all proceeds go to benefit veterans and their families.

Senior Lunch
A luncheon will be held on Monday, May 11, at 11:30 a.m. A selection of three different chicken casseroles will be available, fresh green salad, potato salad, vegetables, dessert and beverage. Also the May birthdays will be celebrated, all for a donation of $5 per person. Everyone is invited to attend, bring a friend. The Lakes Region Senior Center is at Little Falls Activity Center, 40 Acorn St., Gorham.
Smith Cemetery Association Meets
The annual meeting of Smith Cemetery Association will be held at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, at Windham Masonic Lodge on River Road. If you would like to join or find out more about this, the last cemetery association in town, you are welcome to attend.
VFW Meets
The Windham Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet on Wednesday, May 13, at the Windham Veterans Center in North Windham. Supper will be at 5 p.m. followed at 6 p.m. by the meeting and installation of officers.
Seniors Spring Luncheon
On Thursday, May 14, a spring luncheon will be held at noon at Unity Gardens, Tandberg Trail, North Windham. The menu includes meatloaf with mashed potato and gravy, vegetable, rolls, dessert and beverages. $5 per person donation. A raffle and 50/50 drawing will be held. Flags Around Town
American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 members will meet at 6 a.m. at the North Windham Fire Station on Saturday, May 16, to place flags on the utility poles on the highways and byways of Windham. This is the 10th year that the flags have gone up and flown from Memorial Day to Labor Day as a symbol of the town’s patriotic spirit. For details, call 892-1306.
Wellness Fair
A Wellness Fair will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at Windham Veterans Center. The event is hosted by the Lakes Region Integrative Holistic Health Care Community of the Sebago Lake area. Learn about holistic health care, including therapeutic massage, essential oils for aromatherapy, Reiki, shamanism, holistic nutrition, polarity therapy, chiropractic adjustments, reflexology, psychic readings and neurofeedback. A traditional roast beef dinner with all the fixin’s will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Road. $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12.
Decorating the Cemeteries
Saturday, May 16, is designated as the day that the Veterans and Scout organizations of Windham come together to place flags on the some 800 veterans graves in the 27 cemeteries in Windham. If you would like to support the local VFW and Legion Post in this venture, please meet at Arlington Cemetery at 8:30 a.m. that Saturday for assignments. For more information, call: 892-1306.
The Irish are Coming
On Monday, May 18, professor Michael Connolly will present a program about the arrival and settling in of the Irish in Portland and environs. In Windham, one area is still referred to as “Ireland.” The program starts at 7 p.m. and Connolly will have copies of his books available. A membership meeting will follow the program. Toby Pennels Memorial Race
On Saturday, May 23, the first Toby’s Dream 5K will be held at Windham High School. The schedule is 8:20 a.m., pre-race celebration; 9:30 a.m., the race starts. Events include little kid’s fun run – Kid’s 1.5 K run – Walk-wheel 1.5 k, Sanctioned 5 k Race; variety of post-race Raffles – U. S. flags for first 400 runners, T-shirts for first 150 registrants. Vietnam War 50th Anniversary

American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will recognize those veterans who have passed away this last year and have connections to Windham, with the Tolling of the Bell Ceremony at the upcoming Memorial Day Ceremony, May 25, at 10 p.m. in front of the Windham High School at the Veteran’s Memorial.
The Post has maintained a list of veterans who had an association with Windham (born, lived, worked, etc.) The list covers the period from May 1, 2014, to end of April, 2015. MCC Tour
See what happens behind the walls at Maine Correctional Center. A tour will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 from 1-4 p.m. First come, first serve – there will be a limited capacity for the tour – depending on interest there may be additional tours. Tour participants should be at least 18 years old, not have any friends or family incarcerated, and consent to running a background check and arrive with proper IDs. The Windham Center Stage Theater annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 9, at 6:15 p.m. at the Windham Center Stage Theater located in Windham Town Hall. Elections for the 2015-2016 board will take place between 6:15 and 7 p.m.

Mayfair at Windham Hill UCC will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 30. Mayfair features a craft show and sale from H.O.M.E. Co-op, plants unlimited, a baked goods sale, gently used furniture, the kickoff of a great raffle, children’s games, a luncheon (hot dogs, sandwiches, mac & cheese, drinks, desserts), and tour of the church.
Thoroughly Modern Millie

Got Plants?
Now that spring is really here, you may have discovered your garden is over-run with chives, or oregano, or pinks! If you have extra plants, don’t throw them away. The Windham Historical Society is holding its annual spring plant and garden sale on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The society is seeking “extra” plantings, which are generously donated each year. Favorites include daylilies, hosta, phlox, chives, garlic, pansies and iris. This year the Society has been donated more than 200 shrubs, and tended them all winter so they are ready to go.
