Morning bird walks offered
Starting on Wednesday, May 13, at 7 a.m., the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center will begin offering its weekly Wednesday morning bird walks. The cost is $3 for member and $5 for non-members.
The best birding is in early morning when the birds are busy feeding. Look and listen for snowy egret, glossy ibis, herons, willet, sparrows and more. Tours start at the nature center and attendees then carpool to various birding hotspots.

Hazardous waste drop-off day set
Residents of Scarborough, Saco and Old Orchard Beach can drop off unwanted household hazardous waste at Scarborough Public Works, located at 20 Washington Ave., on Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m.-noon.
Proof of residency is required and all liquid hazardous waste should be brought in a sealed container. Acceptable items include fluorescent bulbs, pool chemicals, furniture polish, button and rechargeable batteries, wood strippers, paint thinner, oil-based paint, pesticides, antifreeze and more.
Items that will not be accepted include any medical waste, tires, computers, explosives, smoke detectors, propane cylinders, latex paint and any unknown product. Call 730-4400 or see www.scarboroughmaine.org/departments/public-works for more information.
Bayscaping workshop offered
Protect South Portland is sponsoring a bayscaping workshop with the Friends of Casco Bay on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and will be held at South Portland High School. Learn about small changes to lawn care practices that will save time and money.
Alzheimer’s group meets May 11
A meeting of the Alzheimer’s Support Group will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 11, at the First Congregational Church in South Portland. The support group meets on the second Monday of each month and provides support to families, friends and individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia.
Knights hosting Mother’s Day breakfast
The Knights of Columbus Council 11747 is having a Mother’s Day Breakfast on Sunday, May 10, from 8:30-12:30 a.m. at the St. Maximilian Kolbe church hall on 150 Black Point Road.
All mothers and grandmother’s eat for free. The cost for the breakfast is $10 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 4-12, free for children 4 and under and $15 for families.
The breakfast consists of blueberry pancakes, home fries, scramble eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit cocktail, coffee, and juices. All are welcome.
Garden club to hold annual meeting
The Osewantha Garden Club of South Portland will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Egg and I Restaurant at 183 U.S. Route 1 Scarborough on Wednesday, May 13, for its annual meeting.
The business meeting will be followed by installation of officers. Nancy Atwell will present a program on container gardening.
Land trust to host plant sale
The South Portland Land Trust will hold its annual plant and bake sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the American Legion Hall, located at 413 Broadway.
The plant sale is a favorite among the local gardening community and offers a wide variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, wildflowers, groundcovers and more.
Proceeds will benefit the ongoing conservation efforts of the land trust and the development of new community gardens by the city’s Community Garden Collective.
The land trust is seeking donations of plants and garden-related items from individuals and/or businesses and is seeking volunteers willing to dig and transplant donated plants and/or help on the day of the sale. Contact Helen at 408-1039 or email hfslocum@maine.rr.com if you can help out.

• Saturday, May 16, 10:30 a.m. – Minecraft Craft
Use wax beads and pegboards to make cool Minecraft-inspired designs to take home. This program is designed for kids 6 and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult and pre-registration is required.
• Thursday, May 21, 6:30 p.m. – An Evening With Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse
Step into history with a presentation by Keith Thompson, chairman of the Spring Point Ledge Light Trust. Learn about the history of the lighthouse and its role in the harbor and take a virtual tour of this historic and iconic structure.
Eastern Trail Alliance annual meeting
The annual meeting of the Eastern Trail Alliance will be held 5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at the Old Marsh Country Club in Wells. To RSVP email to eta@easterntrail.org or call 284-9260.
