Fire damaged a greenhouse at Frugal Farmers on Rankin Road in Buxton early Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the farm, which sells flowers, produce and young plants, at 1:30 a.m. The owners, who live across the street, saw the fire that started in a outbuilding used for storage, said Buxton Fire Chief Nate Schools.

When firefighters arrived, the fire was spreading to one of the nearby greenhouses, he said. Firefighters were able to quickly deploy hand lines and control the fire before it spread to other greenhouses or to a nearby propane tank, he said. Nobody was injured.

The Buxton Fire Department struck a second alarm, summoning mutual aid from nearby communities.

“One of the biggest problems we had to deal with was fertilizer on site and minimizing runoff on the site,” Schools said. Crews tried to use as little water as possible and the owner used a tractor to pile material to create berms to hold back the water from running off the fire site.

The fire killed plants that were growing inside. The owners were evaluating the damage Wednesday to determine whether the greenhouse can be repaired, he said.

Schools said the fire appears to be accidental, but there was too much damage to know if it was related to trash or stored items in the outbuilding or to electrical components there, he said.

Firefighters cleared the area at 5 a.m.
