Revolution play to scoreless tie with Crew
Bobby Shuttleworth had his third shutout in six games and New England played to a scoreless draw with Columbus on Saturday in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
New England (2-2-2) is unbeaten in four games after losing its first two. Columbus (1-2-2) was held scoreless for the second time.
The Revolution beat the Crew in both legs of the 2014 Eastern Conference semifinals.
SPANISH LEAGUE: Barcelona squandered a two-goal lead from goals by Lionel Messi and Neymar to stumble to a 2-2 draw at Sevilla on Saturday, letting Real Madrid pull within two points of the Spanish league leader.
BASKETBALL
COLLEGE: Buffalo moved swiftly to replace Bobby Hurley by promoting assistant Nate Oats to take over as head coach of its men’s basketball team.
Oats’ promotion Saturday came two days after Hurley was hired by Arizona State. Oats spent the past two seasons as an assistant under Hurley and brings continuity to a team that earned its first NCAA Tournament berth last month.
PREP SCHOOLS
SOFTBALL: Berwick Academy won its season opener, 22-0 over the Pingree School, at Hamilton, Massachusetts.
Raegan Kelly struck out eight in a one-hit shutout. Every Berwick player had at least one hit. Anna Cosentino and Lauren Leidemann-Smith both had triples.
FOOTBALL
BROWNS: Quarterback Johnny Manziel has been discharged from the inpatient rehabilitation center where he spent more than 10 weeks receiving treatment for possible substance abuse, a person familiar with the situation confirmed Saturday for the Beacon Journal.
Manziel, the 22nd overall pick in last year’s NFL draft, checked into the facility Jan. 28 in an effort to abandon a hard-partying lifestyle for which he became notorious.
BRONCOS: Free-agent tight end James Casey agreed to a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos on Saturday. He played for coach Gary Kubiak in Houston from 2009-12.
He spent his last two seasons in Philadelphia, where he worked primarily as a run-blocker in Chip Kelly’s offense and made his mark on special teams.
Tennis
GRAND PRIX HASSAN II: Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain reached his first ATP tour final with a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 win over third-seeded Jiri Vesely on Saturdayin Casablanca, Morocco, setting up a final against Martin Klizan.
The 29-year-old Gimeno-Traver served well and did not face a single break point to overcome his Czech opponent in a tight match that lasted nearly 21/2 hours.
FAMILY CIRCLE CUP: Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber ended defending champion Andrea Petkovic’s run of success at the Family Circle Cup, advancing to the final with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over her fellow German and good friend Saturday in Charleston, South Carolina.
Petkovic was 11-0 when she stepped on the court at the Family Circle the past three years.
KATOWICE OPEN: Camila Giorgi upset home favorite Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-2 Saturday in the semifinals in Katowice, Poland.
The third-seeded Giorgi is looking for her first WTA title and will play Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia in Sunday’s final. The eighth-seeded Schmiedlova beat Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-1.
