PITTSBURGH — Troy Polamalu’s career now belongs to the ages.
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the star safety’s retirement on Friday following a spectacular 12 seasons in the NFL that included eight Pro Bowls, four first-team All-Pro selections and two Super Bowl rings.
Steelers chairman Dan Rooney called Polamalu “a tremendous leader” who helped guide the franchise through a six-year run that included three Super Bowl appearances and the team’s fifth and sixth world championships.
Polamalu turns 34 later this month.
GIANTS: The NFL suspended linebacker Victor Butler without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing substances.
Butler is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.
RAMS: The St. Louis Regional Complex and Sports Authority is asking a court to clarify whether the city can contribute tax money for a new NFL stadium without a public vote.
A lawsuit filed Friday seeks clarity as part of the effort to develop a new open-air stadium and keep the Rams in St. Louis.
SAINTS: Former Dallas defender Anthony Spencer signed a one-year contract.
Spencer has played linebacker and defensive end in eight seasons.
