Route 196 was closed for several hours after a vehicle hit a telephone pole and knocked wires down across the road Monday night.
The crash was reported at around 11 p.m. on Route 196 (Lewiston Road) in the area of Andrea Street and Center Park Road. Topsham Police Lt. Fred Dunn said Lawrence St. Amant, 18, with a last know address in Lisbon Falls, was headed eastbound towards Topsham when the crash occurred. Dunn said St. Amant fell asleep and drifted off the road. The 2004 Ford sports utility vehicle he was driving struck and snapped a telephone pole and rolled over.
The road was closed for several hours due to wires across the roadway. Dunn said St. Amant sustained scrapes and was not transported. The Topsham Fire Department responded and the vehicle was towed away.
Dunn said there was alcohol in the vehicle so St. Amant was issued a summons for illegal transportation of liquor by a minor, “but he had not been drinking.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
