Holy Week — from Palm Sunday through Easter — begins this weekend, and several local congregations have planned special services.

Wiscasset Church of the Nazarene

WISCASSET — The Church of the Nazarene will celebrate Palm Sunday with the Glory Bound Gospel Singers in concert on Sunday, March 29, during the 11 a.m. worship service.

Glory Bound has sung extensively from the Southeastern states and into Canada. Its music is southern style gospel with a super melody, according to Pastor Wally Staples, who noted, “They have been singing for the Lord for over 20 years and present the gospel message in their songs.”

Freeport-Pownal community

POWNAL — An Easter sunrise service will be held Sunday, April 5, on the peak of Bradbury Mountain at 6 a.m., with Pastor Sandy Williams officiating.

For those unable to climb, there will be a simultaneous service under the shelter at the foot of the mountain led by the Rev. John Wentworth. Should the weather be severly imclement, the service will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church in Pownal.

Coffee and doughnuts will be served at the Pownal church following the services. The services, sponsored by First Parish Congregational and First Baptist Church of Freeport, are open to all.

Dresden-Richmond United Methodist Church

RICHMOND — Dresden- Richmond United Methodist Church will celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend with an 11 a.m. service on March 29.

A Holy Thursday service is planned at 6:30 p.m. on April 2, followed by a Good Friday service of Tenebrae at 6:30 p.m. on April 3.

Resurrection Sunday begins with an Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. on April 5, followed by an second worship service at 11 a.m.

BATH — The Church of the New Jerusalem is planning a special music during its 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday service on April 5.

Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church

WOOLWICH — Woolwich- Wiscasset Baptist Church on Route 1 invites the public to breakfast on Easter Sunday morning, April 5, at 9 a.m., followed by worship at 10:30 a.m.

Day’s Ferry Congregational Church

WOOLWICH — The Day’s Ferry Congregational Church has announced its services for Holy Week, which begins March 29 with a Palm Sunday worship service at 10 a.m.

The church will hold its annual Tenebrae Service on Maundy Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m.

The service will include the sacrament of Holy Communion, readings from scripture tracing Jesus’ crucifixion and burial as sanctuary lights are dimmed, and special music for the congregation and choir.

The Resurrection will be celebrated on Easter Sunday, April 5, beginning with breakfast at 9 a.m. Following the meal will be an Easter worship service at 10 a.m.

All services will be led by the Rev. Alan Baughcum.

Edgecomb Congregational Church, UCC

EDGECOMB — Edgecomb Congregational Church will observe Holy Week with several services, beginning with Palm Sunday on March 29.

Worshipers will celebrate Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem with the distribution of palms. Worship service begins at 9:30 a.m.

A Maundy Thursday service on April 2 begins at 7:30 p.m. The service of worship will celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, and observe the Service of Tenebrae, the gradual diminution of light.

Easter Sunday is April 5. A sunrise service will be held at 6:15 a.m. at Fort Edgecomb, 66 Old Fort Road. At 9:30 a.m., worship moves to the sanctuary of Edgecomb Congregational Church, as those gathered greet the risen Christ with a service of word and praise.

An Easter morning breakfast will be served between the services, beginning at 7:30 a.m., and include frittatas, muffins, fruit, yogurt, granola, oatmeal, juice and coffee. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Free worship concerts with John Waller

AUGUSTA — Contemporary

Christian recording artist John Waller will follow his successful free Christmas concert tour with a return to Maine for three free Easter-week worship events.

Waller’s music was featured in the movie “Courageous” and his song “While I’m Waiting” was the title track for “Fireproof.” His new song, “Crazy Faith,” will also be the title song for the new movie, “The War Room.” The latest Kendrick Brothers production is due to be released in August.

These are free concerts with a love offering being taken. Come and worship and hear Waller’s testimony.

Waller will be at Kennebec Community Church at 7 p.m. on April 2. The church is located at 20 Saint Andrews St., Augusta.

On Good Friday, April 3, he will be in Portland at the Good Friday breakfast meeting for Christian Leaders In Maine Business (CLIMB). The group meets at 7:30 a.m. at Holiday Inn by the Bay, 88 Spring St., Portland.

Later that night he will be at Old Town Christian Fellowship fora7p.m.show.
