SOMETIMES, THINGS REALLY DO get lost in the mail. The Brunswick and Topsham Water District found that out this week when a bill they sent out was returned to them more than four decades later. “Sometimes our customers don’t believe us when we say we mailed their bill,” the district posted on its Facebook page Tuesday. “Today, we received a little surprise in our mail. We received back a customer’s final bill from Oct. 20, 1969.” The bill was mailed to a resident of Old Farm Road in Topsham, but was supposed to be returned to the water district by the post office because customer Dennis Baribeau’s post office box had been closed out. However, it never found its way back to the district until Tuesday, when it was finally returned 46 years later along with the rest of the day’s mail. “I thought, ‘My God, where did this come from?’” said Linda Deacetis, the district’s executive secretary on Wednesday, who is shown displaying the bill. The bill appears in good condition, having been sent Oct. 20, 1969. The district believes that Baribeau has since passed away. The bill was for $1.40, affixed with a 6-cent stamp.
