Firefighters from several communities responded Monday morning Monday to a two-alarm chimney fire at a home on Gorham’s South Street (Route 114), closing down both travel lanes.

Deputy Gorham Fire Chief Jim Poitras said the fire at 136 South St. was under control in about 30 minutes and he said there were there no injuries. Poitras said a 93-year-old was a resident at the address.

Buxton, Scarborough, Standish, Westbrook and Windham fire departments assisted Gorham. Gorham Deputy Fire Chief Ken Fickett said Wednesday that the fire at 136 South St. began in the chimney and then extended into interior walls on the first floor of the house.? ?Fickett estimated damage at $20,000 or more.
