Fun festivities for all ages are lined up for Bath Blarney Days, the city’s seventh annual Irish-themed celebration, which is scheduled to begin this Thursday and last through St. Patrick’s Day.

A variety of events will take place during this six-day period, with Bath businesses promoting sales and community activities throughout the week. Some owners have even decorated store windows in preparation for the celebration.

Maggie Byrnes-Lair, the manager of Byrnes Irish Pub, said the best thing about the event is how it encompasses an assortment of activities that includes people of all ages.

“It’s fun seeing different aspects of the city, businesses and organizations celebrating together,” she said.

Carolyn Lockwood, director of downtown organization Main Street Bath, said Blarney Days evolved from an event called “Moonlight Madness,” at the suggestion of Joe Byrnes, the owner of Byrnes Irish Pub.

After the pub’s opening, Byrnes-Lair said it was neat to see people in the community showing an interest in Irish heritage and embracing their own Irish backgrounds. For this reason, she said Blarney Days has flourished over the years.

Preceding the celebrations is Bath’s Pot O’ Gold Passport Challenge, where participants must visit 30 or so Bath businesses. After a completed passport is turned in, a winner will be drawn for a collection of prizes that will be provided by each of the participating businesses.

Lockwood said this is a good way to get people acquainted with the merchants in Bath, especially in preparation for the celebration.

Bath Blarney Days will kick off with a wine tasting at Now You’re Cooking on Thursday, and on Friday, the Toronto roots rock band Jubilee Riots, formerly known as Enter the Haggis, will be performing at Chocolate Church.

Most of the events will be taking place on Saturday, with the sixth annual Shamrock Sprint 5k starting at 9 a.m. Registration ends on Friday, and the first 100 participants will receive a free T-shirt.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will follow shortly after, which will feature floats from different organizations in the community, including a highly anticipated performance from the Maine Public Safety Pipe and Drum Corps.

Byrnes-Lair said the amount of snow has been challenging, as it has affected the organization and participation in the parade, but she is still hopeful of the outcome.

Lockwood confirmed the buzz surrounding the presence of the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile and the L.L. Bean Bootmobile in the parade this year, which will only add to the fun.

Following the parade, there will be a cookie decorating event at Now You’re Cooking, and a Blarney Pub Crawl in the evening with live entertainment and prizes that will start at Kennebec Tavern at 6 p.m.

Lockwood said the community responds well to the festivities every year, with some even calling ahead of time to ask about the parade and upcoming events for Blarney Days.

“Unlike a lot of our other events, this is really community based. It’s very fun and light-hearted,” she said. “Everybody should come on down and have some fun.”

Another new event this year is a hurling demonstration that will be given by Dublin native Kevin Collier, from the Portland Hurling Club of Maine, according to Lockwood. The PHC, formed in 2007, is Maine’s only registered club of the Gaelic Athletic Association.

Hurling is an Irish outdoor game, where teams use a stick called a “hurley” to hit a small, leather ball into the opposing team’s goal.

This demonstration will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Mustard Seed Bookstore.

The festivities will end with a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the downtown restaurants and pubs all day, with live music being performed at Byrnes Irish Pub.

“It’s the perfect time of the year, with the end of winter and beginning of spring — everything is starting to brighten up,” Byrnes- Lair added.
