ALFRED — Police this morning said a 31-year-old Sanford man was in serious condition after a head-on crash on Route 202 early Sunday morning.

Andrew Durgin’s condition had been upgraded from critical to serious, said Maine State Police Trooper Matthew Williams. Durgin was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland by helicopter following the crash.

Police and rescue workers were called to the crash on Route 202, just east of the Central Maine Power headquarters, near the Sanford line, at 12:43 a.m. Sunday.

Williams said Durgin was the operator of a 2008 Nissan Sentra headed west toward Sanford while Seth Place, 28, of Waterboro was driving his 2008 GMC pickup truck east, toward Alfred.

Williams said Place told police that he was distracted by looking down at his cell phone, but added that information is as yet unconfirmed ”“ the crash remains under investigation. A reconstruction has taken place and the results of that operation will be analyzed.

Place sustained minor injuries in the crash, the trooper said.

Williams said the head-on collision impacted the driver’s side of both vehicles. The Sentra was spun 180 degrees ”“ and so was the pickup truck, Williams said, which flipped over, righted itself and ended up in a snow bank.
