Ethan Murphy, Cape Elizabeth basketball: Murphy made a driving layup just before the final buzzer to give the Capers a 44-42 victory over Medomak Valley for the Class B state championship. He finished with 13 points. It was Cape’s first basketball state championship since 1988.

HONORABLE MENTION

Hany Ramadan, Deering indoor track: Ramadan finished third in the 600 meters at the New England high school championships in Boston with a time of 1:22.34.

Matt Caron, Scarborough hockey: Caron scored the first two goals to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead after one period, then added an assist on a second-period goal as Scarborough beat Cheverus 5-2 for the Western Class A title.

Ben Bragg, Scarborough hockey: Bragg made 25 saves, including several key ones in the third period, to preserve a one-goal lead against Cheverus in the Western Class A final. Scarborough added a couple empty-net goals in the final minute to advance to the state final.

GIRLS

Kate Hall, Lake Region indoor track: Hall broke two New England records while winning the 55-meter dash and the long jump at the New England high school championships in Boston. Hall won the 55 with a time of 6.95 seconds, just .02 seconds off the best time in the nation this season. In the long jump, she twice improved on her national No. 1 ranking, first with a jump of 20 feet, 2 1/2 inches in the trials and then 20-6 in the finals.

HONORABLE MENTION

Moira Train, Greely basketball: Train sank two 3-pointers to key a big second quarter as Greely outscored Presque Isle 27-5 to take a 33-10 halftime lead en route to a 56-39 win for the Class B state championship. Train finished with three 3-pointers and a team-high 14 points.

Alyssa Coyne, Greely indoor track: Coyne threw the shot put 40 feet, 3/4 inches to place fifth in the event at the New England high school championships. It was a personal best distance for Coyne.

Alexandra Hart, Thornton Academy basketball: Hart, a freshman, scored a team-high 14 points for the Golden Trojans in the Class A state championship game. Hart had six points in the third quarter to help her team take a 36-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Lawrence rallied to win, 50-43.
