A water main break in a high-traffic area of Stroudwater Street in Westbrook has slowed traffic Monday, as crews hope to repair the problem by 5 p.m.

According to Michelle Clements, the Portland Water District’s spokeswoman, the break is located in the vicinity of 254 Stroudwater St., lying between Westbrook High School and Westbrook Middle School. She said the break impacts roughly 30 customers.

“We hope to have water restored and traffic back to normal by 5 p.m. tonight,” she said.

The break occurred Sunday morning at about 9 a.m., she said, but work on Stroudwater was not scheduled until today due to another water main break in Portland yesterday.

Clements said the area is currently open for two-lane traffic, but movement is still slow. The Westbrook Police Department is also on scene assisting with traffic flow.

“It is a good idea if you can to avoid the area,” Clements said.
