A dispute involving what entity would head up youth baseball and softball in Gorham remained unresolved early this week.
At issue is whether Gorham Recreation Department or a volunteers’ group, Gorham Youth Baseball and Softball, would organize Cal Ripkin Baseball and Babe Ruth Softball programs in the town this year.
Cindy Hazelton, director of Gorham Recreation Department, said that Gorham Town Manager David Cole has called for two meetings in an effort to resolve the problem. Representatives from the two entities were to meet from 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, after the American Journal deadline, and again on Monday, March 2, in Cole’s office at Gorham Municipal Center.
Hazelton said she will attend the meetings with Cole, as will Recreation Department sports director Mike Gradone and three members of the volunteers’ group – Cressey Mollison, president; Rich Murray, softball coordinator; and Roger Smith, travel league.
Mediation meetings scheduled for Monday and Tuesday this week were postponed.
Before play is authorized this year, a charter would be needed from the league headquarters in New Jersey. Hazelton said Tuesday that no charter had been issued for 2015. But, the volunteers’ group on its website has announced a meeting for all coaches on Tuesday, March 3.
In recent seasons, Gorham Recreation Department handled registrations and the two entities shared roles in organizing the two youth programs.
Gorham Recreation Department was accepting player registrations on Tuesday, Feb. 24, as was the volunteers’ group, according to its website.
“I think it will be resolved by Monday,” Hazelton said.
