Community Birthday

The Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational Church of Gray is taking orders for the Community Birthday Calendar, which runs from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. The price is $6 per calendar which includes two free listings (Birthday, Anniversary, In Memory, or events) each additional listing costs 50 cents.

If you wish to order one, please send your name and phone number and listings along with a check made out to: Community Birthday Calendar, Women’s Fellowship, c/o First Congregational Church of Gray, PO Box 155, Gray, ME 04039.

This fundraiser goes to support many projects such as Vacation Bible School, Awesome Bible Adventures, providing assistance for children attending Pilgrim Lodge, and donations to the Gray-New Gloucester Community Food Pantry to name a few.

Saturday Night Suppers

Your invited to a public supper with a menu of baked beans, casseroles, salads, homemade breads, desserts and beverages on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. The meal will be served at the First Congregational Church, Route 115, Gray. The cost for adults is $8, children under 12 is $4. The hall is handicapped accessible. For more information, contact 657-4279, or day of supper 657-3279.

On Saturday, March 7, from 5-6 p.m., Gray American Legion Post No. 86 at 15 Lewiston Road, Gray, will be holding its monthly traditional bean supper with hot dogs, coleslaw, bread and for those who don’t like beans, chop suey and, of course, dessert.

All you can eat. Adults are $8, children under 12 are $4.

Free Movies, Etc.

Movies in the Gray Public Library “theater” on Hancock Street are free and open to all. Here are some scheduled movie show times: Saturday, Feb. 28, 1 p.m., “Big Hero 6” (PG); Tuesday, March 3, 6:30 p.m., “The Theory of Everything” (PG-13); Saturday, March 7, 1 p.m., “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” (PG-13); Robin Williams Tribute on Thursday, March 5, 2 p.m., “The Fisher King” (R); Thursday, March 12, 2 p.m., “Good Will Hunting” (R).

On Wednesday, March 11, at 2 p.m., “See What a Librarian Sees.” Ever wonder what strange and mysterious things a librarian sees on the other side of the desk? Now is your chance to find out. This 60-minute session will allow you an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes view of what the world looks like for your local librarian.

• Photography Classes –Advanced Class: March 25 to April 15, 12 Portland Road, Tsukroff Studio 6:30 p.m. -8:30 p.m. Instructor: Nathan Tsukroff. Class is $53 per person.

• The Pennell Ice Rink is open from sunrise to sunset. The Stick and Puck hours are Thursday from 2-6 p.m. and Saturdays noon-4 p.m. Skate at your own risk but skate safe.

• Ultimate Indoor Garage Sale, Saturday, March 28. at the Newbegin Community Center. Free and open to public from 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Vendors, bring your gently used items, crafts and books to sell. Tables are 6 feet, with one table for $16, two tables for $26. Space for your own table is $11, (space would be comparable to a 6-foot table). Please contact Gray Rec if you are in need of an electrical outlet.

Sorry, food may not be sold at this event by vendors but Gray Recreation will have snacks and drinks for sale.

Winterfest 2015

The Gray Snowolves’ Winterfest 2015 will be on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the top of Libby Hill in Gray. From 9 a.m.-noon, there will be a Snowmobile Poker Run. From noon-2 p.m., a cookout will be held. And from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., a Silent Auction will be ongoing. Gift certificates and goods donated by local business. All proceeds are used for funds to help volunteers keep the 39 miles of trails maintained. See www.graysnowolves.com for more information.

Become an EMT or Firefighter

There is no better way to help your neighbors. Gray Fire and Rescue is now recruiting for EMTs or Firefighters.

Gray Rescue, formed in 1969, is now Gray Fire-Rescue, a combination department providing 24-hour fire and medical emergency services to the town of Gray (pop. 7,500).

Dance for Autism

On Saturday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m., Studio for the Living Arts Dance Complex located in Gray will host the 10th Anniversary “Dance for Autism” performance to support the Autism Society of Maine. The show will include nearly 300 dancers from different performing groups throughout the state. The performance will be held at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center, 471 Stroudwater St., Westbrook.

The audience will enjoy performances in tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop and modern dance forms. Tickets for this event are on sale now through Brown Paper Tickets: www.danceforautism.brownpapertickets.com. Tickets at the door will be $16.

Narrow Gauge Director Honored

The executive director of the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. and Museum, Donnell Carroll, was recently honored by his hometown of Gray with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the town’s annual appreciation dinner in December.

Town Manager Deb Cabana, called the longtime resident’s ability to give the town of Gray a voice, both in Augusta and at the local level, “invaluable,” adding, “Your gift of time, energy and enthusiastic support has helped our town thrive.”

Carroll has served in many capacities within the town of Gray community through the decades. He has been a moderator for town and school board meetings, chaired the community and economic development committees, coached youth sports, assisted in the review and hiring process for town managers and fire chiefs, spent more than 10 years as a volunteer EMT, and is presently active with the Gray Historical Society.

Carroll has served as the executive director of the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum since October 2013. The organization is raising funds to build a new museum and relocate their historic railroad operation to Gray.
