At about 10 a.m. Sunday morning, the South Portland Fire Department was dispatched to a fire in a two-unit apartment building at 143 Ocean St.

On arrival, responders saw heavy smoke coming from the left side of the building from a second-floor window, according to Lt. Robb Couture. On advancing to the second story, crews encountered heavy fire in the kitchen and living areas. All occupants were out of the building and crews quickly had the fire under control.

The second story suffered extensive fire damage. The first floor sustained water and smoke damage. The fire started on a stove in the kitchen, and is not considered suspicious, Couture said. Several cats perished in the fire, but there were no injuries to residents or firefighters. The fire went to an “all hands” alarm, with mutual aid on scene from Portland. Firefighters cleared the scene at around 1:30 p.m.
