I know I opened up with the snow in my last article, but really, what else is there to talk about? I am only glad I don’t live in Boston, for once southern New England got it worse than we did.

Speaking of the weather dominating the news, locally and beyond, the School Spirit Challenge I have been reporting about has been postponed due to a possible storm. Originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, it is now Thursday, Feb. 26, at 6 a.m. at Lake Region High School. Events are planned for the whole day. More information is available on the school’s website, just google SAD 61 to find it.

Also, please help yourselves and your local emergency response crews by clearing paths for them around the house and any obstructions that might impede them trying to save your life!

Ice Dreams!

These girls don’t mind a little frigid air! Senior Girl Scout troop 1747, made up of ninth-grade girls from Naples, Bridgton and Sebago, took a trip to Winter Carnival in Quebec City.

The girls worked hard for two years raising money by selling thousands of boxes of cookies, doing a spaghetti dinner, a car wash and craft fair. It was the first trip out of the country for many of the girls and they loved the French culture and European feel of the beautiful city.

During the trip they did many of the Carnival activities, sampled local cuisine and visited a great museum where they learned the history of Quebec and got to see an amazing exhibit about Greek Mythology.

Three out of the six girls have been together in the troop since kindergarten and all feel more like a family than a troop. It was such an amazing experience for the girls and now that they’ve been bitten by the travel bug, they hope to do another trip together before senior year! Congratulations to the troop on setting a goal and achieving it!

Naples Library: Did You Know?

Did you know there are many ways you can contribute to the support of your library? You can dedicate a book to a loved one to commemorate a birthday, graduation or their memory. A label will be placed in the book with your dedication.

You can sponsor a magazine, a newspaper or underwrite a program. How about donating your bottles and cans to their CLYNK account by picking up a marked bag at the library for your returnables.

You can offer to teach a class or a workshop on a subject of your expertise. Donate gently used books, puzzles or CDs to their Book Barn or visit their Book Barn to purchase items.

Throughout the year, the library holds popular fundraisers like their House Tour, Duck Drop and Cookie Walk/Mini Art Sale (please note there will be no Annual Yard Sale this year). Did you know that the library has federal and state tax forms available in the library’s foyer.

Anti-Bullying Program Needs Local Help

Bridgton Rotary Club member Dick Enright, Joanna Moore of CrossWalk Community Outreach Program, and Gina McKenney of The Opportunity Alliance are some of the important players joining forces to work on trying to find support in our area from nonprofits, businesses, civic groups, churches and individuals to bring the successful anti-bullying presentation, “The Golden Rule Project,” to our local schools.

Crosswalk, of Naples, is supporting these efforts as it is in line with their core values for their organization. For more information on how you can get involved, contact Gina at gina.mckenney@opportunityalliance.org.
