The Moorebrook Farm in Scarborough is hoping to diversify its products by adding freshly made, local ice cream to its seasonal offerings.
Owned by the Harmon family, the 29-acre farm is located off the Black Point Road, with a farm stand on the corner of Spurwink and Black Point, across from the main entrance to Camp Ketcha.
The farm stand is known for its fresh fruit and vegetables, specifically, zucchini, summer squash, corn, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, potatoes, peas, Brussell sprouts, pumpkins and winter squash.
The goal is to now also offer locally produced ice cream, mixed with the fresh berries grown on the farm, according to the family. It has not chosen an ice cream company to partner with yet.
The Harmons were set to appear before the Planning Board on Tuesday, after the Current’s deadline. The family is asking for permission to expand its parking lot and add a 410-square-foot ice cream shack to the existing farm stand.
The activity is allowed under the town’s zoning ordinances, but there is a requirement that at least 51 percent of all the products sold at the combined location come from the farm itself.
The Harmon family has owned the farm since 1925 and the farm stand is open annually from the second week in June, when the strawberries are ripe, to Oct. 31.
