Bates collects 9-1 victory in baseball season opener

Rockwell Jackson went 2 for 4 with a double and triple in the opener as Bates beat Caltech 9-1 at Pasadena, California.

Brendan Fox had a pair of singles and a run scored as the Bobcats never trailed in the game.

Will Levangie pitched the first three innings, allowing a run on two hits for the win.

• Joe Coyne went 3 for 5 and drove in all three of St. Joseph’s runs in a 12-3 loss to Emory at Atlanta.

Dan Meeken took the loss, going 31/3 innings, allowing nine hits with a pair of strikeouts.

MEN’S HOCKEY: Lorne Miller used an assist from Todd Bannerman midway through the third period to give Southern Maine (6-18-1, 3-14-1) a one-goal lead over Castleton State (10-15, 8-10) in an ECAC play-in game at Castleton, Vermont.

Brett Norman added an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left in the game for the 5-3 win.

Bannerman, Daniel Mattsson and Chad O’Brien also scored for the Huskies.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Raheem Anderson hit a layup and a jumper to give Husson a 48-44 lead as the Eagles (18-5) broke away from Bowdoin (17-7) for a 72-61 win at Brunswick.

Aaron Willis had 27 points to lead Husson while Lucas Hausman had 17 to lead Bowdoin.

• Mike Boomazian had 16 points as Bates held on to beat St. Joseph’s 62-57 in a nonconference game at Standish.

• Malcolm Brogdon had 18 points and No. 2 Virginia (24-1, 12-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a late 8-0 scoring run to beat Pittsburgh 61-49 at Charlottesville, Virginia.

• Darrun Hilliard scored 18 points as No. 6 Villanova (24-2, 11-2 Big East) cruised to an 80-54 win at home over Seton Hall.

• Juwan Staten’s layup with four seconds left lifted No. 23 West Virginia to a 62-61 upset over No. 8 Kansas at Morgantown, West Virginia.

BIATHLON

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Clare Egan of Cape Elizabeth was among four U.S. women selected to compete in the biathlon world championships starting March 4 in Kontiolahti, Finland.

Egan, 27, made her World Cup debut in late January. .

BASEBALL

MAJORS: The Yankees are retiring the uniform numbers of Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams, bringing their total of retired numbers to 20.

HOSPITALIZED: Former Dodgers third baseman Pedro Guerrero, the 1981 World Series co-MVP, was hospitalized in the Dominican Republic with bleeding on the brain.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Amare Stoudemire is an ex-Knick now – bought out and waived by the team as expected. In 255 games as a Knick, he averaged 17.3 points and 6.7 rebounds.

D-LEAGUE: The Maine Red Claws reacquired guard Tim Frazier after his 10-day contract with the Philadelphia 76ers expired.

Frazier will rejoin the team in Fort Wayne on Tuesday.
