The Freeport boys alpine ski team posted a spectacular finish in last Tuesday’s Western Maine Conference regionals at Shawnee Peak, grabbing first place by an enormous margin.
The trio of Caleb Abbott, Ryder Bennell and Blake Enrico led the squad to a vanishingly small 49-point total, 52 better than second-place Greely, at 101.
“The best part about the whole thing for me was that the team skied as a team,” said Freeport head coach Jay Thomas. “We didn’t have anyone who won the race, but as a team we won, because we all stood up and skied two runs and they were good runs.”
Abbott-Bennell-Enrico went three-four-five in the Giant Slalom, in times of 1:37.78, 1:39.47 and 1:39.96, respectively. In the Slalom, the triumvirate mixed up their order a little: Abbott finished second (1:32.68), Enrico fourth (1:34.44) and Bennell fifth (1:35.82).
Since a school’s top four skiers’ scores are all counted, the Falcons’ fourth man was also critical in both events. In the Giant Slalom, that was Charlie Zachau, who finished 15th (of 46, bear in mind), in a time of 1:53.03. Isaac Salisbury came in just behind him a mere four-hundredths of a second behind him, in fact (1:53.07).
In the Slalom, it was Salisbury’s turn to prove the linchpin. Salisbury grabbed 11th (again, of 46 total skiers), in 1:45.54; Zachau followed him in 13th (1:48.24).
Those five boys, along with sixth-man Griffin Agnese, travel this week to Big Rock in Mars Hill for States, where they’ll encounter the exciting challenge of fresh competition.
“There’s some schools we’ve never skied against,” Thomas said. “We don’t know how Presque is going to be, we don’t know how Maranacook is going to be. There’re unknowns. We’re going to go as a team and ski as a team.”
The Yarmouth boys finished third as a team at WMCs, with 122 points; Fryeburg took fourth (142), Gray-New Gloucester fifth (210) and Cape Elizabeth sixth (214).
Of special note was Taylor Davis’s first-place finish in both Giant Slalom and Slalom: Davis was the lone entrant representing Lake Region. Even though the school doesn’t have the bodies to field a full team, Davis brought plenty of pride back to Naples.
On the girls’ side, Greely finished first (67), beating Cape by the narrowest of divides a single point. Falmouth placed third (97), Yarmouth fourth (111), Fryeburg fifth (212) and Freeport sixth (278).
The Lady Falcons are just three athletes strong this season, but continue to battle. That trio – Wynne Cushing, Ashley Taylor and Kaia Williams – travel to Monday and Tuesday’s State Championships as well, held after the Tri-Town Weekly’s deadline.
Also worth highlighting are the Skimeister results, which combine Nordic with Alpine finishes to award a special crown. Gray-New Gloucester’s Eric Wilcox won the 2015 WMC Boys Skimeister title, with a brilliant 43-point showing. Greely’s Tim Adams took second (84) and Cape Elizabeth’s John Fiutak third (141).
Among girls, Abby Condon of Yarmouth earned the award (81), over G-NG’s Keaton McEvoy (105) and Greely’s Jesie Hoffman (150).
