Veterans Support

Veteran’s Service Officer Matt Haley will be at the Windham Veterans Center from 9 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, Feb. 25, for any veteran or veteran’s dependent who has questions or needs information.

Medicare Reminder

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham.

A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon. In addition to the seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m.-noon. Please call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for the upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated.

Senior Center

Lakes Region Senior Center at North Gorham Church, 4 Standish Neck Road, Gorham, welcomes seniors from all the towns in the Lakes Region daily, Monday-Thursday. Bring a friend to any of the following February events. A Valentine Luncheon takes place Monday, Feb 16, at 11:30 a.m. Everything on the menu will be red: red hot dogs, red beans, chili, red Jell-O salad, tossed salad with red tomatoes, and red cake with strawberry ice cream. Blanche will have a brain-teaser quiz related to the holiday, with a prize going to the winner. Food and entertainment for only $5. Be sure to wear something red. Daily activities include Mahjong on Monday at 9:30 a.m. Beginners welcome. For more information, call Diane, 892-9529; Tuesday is crafting with Avis (892-0298). Poker and card tables are also busy. Wednesday includes socializing, puzzle table and other activities of choice; second and fourth Wednesdays are weight support, nutrition, and stretching exercises. For more information, call Diane. Texas Hold ’Em Poker

Like to play poker? At Dena’s Restaurant, the Windham Veterans Association hosts Texas Hold ’Em Poker on the first and third Wednesdays each month, starting at 7 p.m. Sign up is at 6:30 p.m. and anyone signed up by 6:45 gets a free $1,000 chip. Proceeds benefit the Veterans Center building and operations. Dena’s Restaurant is next to Windham Post Office – great food and drinks available. Next date is Feb. 18.

Maple Syrup Making

A program about the history of maple syrup making will be presented by Windham Historical Society on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 9 a.m. at the public meeting room of the Windham library. Lyle Merrifield of Merrifield Farms will tell us all about this unique product. Refreshments will be available. A $5 donation is suggested to further expand the Society’s educational community projects.

Visit Animals

The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals welcomes the public to visit its facility in South Windham, and meet the animals available for adoption. Admission to the 279 River Road farm is free, and it is open to the public every day of the year from 1-4 p.m.

Opening March 13

Windham Center Stage Theater has just begun rehearsals for its star-quality children’s production of “Little Mermaid Jr.”

Don’t forget to set aside time to see Ariel, Ursula, Sebastian and their whole chorus of other colorful sea creatures! Opening night is Friday, March 13. Look to reserve your tickets mid-February. Visit the website at http://windhamtheater.org.

Abandoned Cemetery?

Windham Historical Society is seeking the location of “abandoned” or unknown, perhaps old family, burial grounds in town. The location of nearly 25 is known, but if readers are aware of some that have been missed, contact the Society at 892-1433 or email info@windhamhistorical.org. It would be much appreciated!

Free Sand

Free sand is available at Public Works throughout the winter months. The pickup hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and weekends that Public Works crews are plowing. Please remember that sand is for residents only. No contractors will be allowed. When you enter through the gates follow the driveway down the hill. The covered shed is on the righthand side. Each resident is allowed two buckets of 5 gallons at a time. This sand is mixed with road salt. You must bring your own buckets and a shovel.
