Dance, Dance, Dance

Alexis Elder, 17, of North Yarmouth, was recently the winner of a Facebook contest held by Impact Dance Adjudicators, out of Astoria, N.Y. Alexis is a dancer in the Pulse Dance Company from The Studio for the Living Arts Dance Complex here in Gray. Impact Dance Adjudicators was founded by professional dancer Courtney Ortiz and is the first and only Dance Adjudicators staffing service providing professional, pre-screened, high-level judges to dance competitions nationwide.

The Facebook contest asked competition dancers to post a favorite dance picture of themselves from competition on their Facebook page’s wall, along with the answer to the following question: “Which judge’s critique from last competition season have you applied and focused on the most in your dance training this year?”

Elder, who has been training at Studio for the Living Arts since she was 7, answered, “Ever since I was little I have always been told by my teachers and competition judges that I need to plie? more deeply when I’m dancing. For many years I worked hard at the ballet barre attempting to get my plie? a little deeper but I wasn’t seeing any results. I’ve since learned that it was due to the bone-structure of my ankle joints. Now I have come to terms with the fact that my plie? won’t get any deeper, but that doesn’t mean I will keep getting the correction. My goal for this year is to mask the fact that I can barely plie? by strengthening other aspects of my dancing. I have worked on strengthening my feet. I have made my spot quicker and I have strengthened my core. Because of my hard work this year I have already met several personal goals of mine that I didn’t think would ever be possible without a deep plie?.”

Three contestants were selected to receive a personal judges’ critique of their 2015 solo providing helpful feedback from Courtney Ortiz. For more information about Pulse Dance Company and Studio for the Living Arts visit www.studioforthelivngarts.com.
