BRUNSWICK — Beth Bartlett, 77, of Brunswick and Fearrington Village, N.C., died at Falmouth-bythe Sea on Feb. 3, 2015, of pancreatic cancer.

She was born in New York City on May 19, 1937, the daughter of Lewis P. Stanton and Jane Sternberg Stanton. She lived in Harrison and Scarsdale, N.Y., graduating from Scarsdale High School in 1955. She attended Skidmore College for two years and graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in 1959. In 1960, she married Frederick S. Bartlett and lived in Boston, Needham, and Wellesley, Mass. In 1968, she moved with the family to Hanover, N.H., and in 1973, to Brunswick.

She received a master’s degree from the University of Southern Maine in 1979 and completed additional graduate courses there in various education subjects over the following years. She was a teacher for over 30 years, initially at Woolwich Central School and then at Coffin Elementary School in Brunswick where she was a reading and literacy specialist and also directed the English as a Second Language (ESL) program for the Brunswick school system. In retirement, she also conducted a number of programs for ESL students at the Hyde School in Bath.

Beth was an avid gardener, each year planting and refurbishing extensive vegetable, fruit, and flower gardens. She was a member of the Maine Orchid Society for several years and every windowsill in her house was crowded with orchids and other treasured specimens. She was a voracious reader and was seldom about without a book or her Kindle in hand. She also enjoyed reading aloud to her husband and family especially when travelling by car to her winter retreat in Vero Beach, Fla., or her home in North Carolina or to visit her children and grandchildren in Ohio.

In addition to her husband of 54 years, Beth is survived by her three sons: Jeffrey, his wife, Kira, and granddaughters Katie and Emily of Columbus, Ohio; Frederick II and his partner Christine Richardson of Canaan, N.H.; and Reed of Brunswick, as well as a sister, Linda Maynard and her husband Frank C. Maynard Jr. of West Lebanon, N.H., and Cary, N.C. A brother, Frederick Stanton, predeceased her in 2002.

There will be no public service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Habitat for Humanity. Memories and condolences can be expressed at www.brackettfuneralhome.com.
