Maine’s Roman Catholic schools have a new superintendent.

Portland Bishop Robert Deeley on Wednesday named Jim King to oversee 10 elementary and middle schools and three high schools across the state. Combined, the schools have more than 3,000 students.

Jim King is a 1990 graduate of the University of Akron where he received a bachelor's degree in secondary education. He earned a master's in educational leadership in Catholic schools at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, in 2004, and he is currently working toward a Ph.D. in Catholic educational leadership from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. King, who officially takes over July 1, is currently the interim director of elementary schools for the National Catholic Educational Association. He succeeds the Rev. Louis Phillips, who has served as interim superintendent since last July.

Deeley says King is “an experienced educator recognized for his integrity and innovation.”

King said in a statement he is “tremendously excited.”

King, a native of Akron, Ohio, is married with three children. He has degrees from the University of Akron and Seton Hall University in New Jersey.
