Fifteen schools collided in the SMAA (Southwestern Maine Athletic Association) track championships on Saturday, and Scarborough came out on top. The Red Storm showed especially strong on the boys’ side of things, besting No. 2 Thornton by a huge margin.

A number of coaches provided various perspectives on the action. Bonny Eagle boys coach Greg Wilkinson emphasized his team’s continued growth: “It was nice watching our young kids, especially our non-scorers, show their continued improvement. These are the kids that don’t often get mentioned, but are the heart of the team.”

Scots girls coach Chris Strout nodded to the team’s biggest performers on the day, including Kyaunna Libby and Elisabeth Redwood, both of whom won events, as well as Derek Axelsen, who won the Jim Dyer Trophy, given to an “outstanding competitor from the regular season.”

Windham girls coach Scott Rush-Donohue especially highlighted his girls’ strides – their figurative ones, that is.

“Fifteen of the 20 girls finished with seasonal best performances,” he said. “Nine set personal records.”

And naturally, qualifying for States was the ultimate goal.

“Alex Lewis and Eliza Palow have now joined Ali Wintle, Meg Knights and Julia Preston as automatically qualified in their events for States on the 16th,” Rush-Donohue said. Knights, he added, was selected as the SMAA Most Improved Senior Athlete for the season.
