Fifteen schools collided in the SMAA track championships on Saturday, and Scarborough came out on top. The Red Storm showed especially strong on the boys’ side of things, besting No. 2 Thornton by a huge margin.
Tim Even, Westbrook head coach, was happy, even mid-meet, with his team’s performance. “It’s going good so far. We’re picking up some points where we weren’t really expecting to pick up points. That’s always a good thing. Reilley Joyce and Emma Berry came up big for us in the junior and senior long jump; they both placed fifth. Abby St. Clair squeaked out a point in the pole vault.”
“Our girls have done a great job; they were undefeated in the regular season,” Even said. “They’ve certainly been one of the best teams all year long. And our guys have come out to play today. We went one-two in the long jump here. You can just see these boys start to get going. They’re all so young.”
Gorham boys coach Jason Tanguay highlighted several key contributors.
“Ethan Orach’s win in the junior 800 was impressive. Not only did he run a tactical race, but he also broke the school record in doing so. Jesse Southard, a junior, also had a very good day as he was a part of three distance races. Jesse stepped up and scored in all three events. I was also happy to see Ben Foster, a senior, step up to achieve a personal record and score fourth in the two-mile after having a week of practice in which his energy level was not the greatest.”
