GORHAM — The Scarborough boys and girls made it a clean sweep Saturday at the SMAA indoor track and field championships at the University of Southern Maine.

The boys won their sixth straight conference title with a dominating display of talent and depth, finishing with 215 points. Thornton Academy was next with 99, followed by Deering (87), Noble (75) and Westbrook (72).

The Scarborough girls also were impressive, scoring 139 points. Thornton had 104, Westbrook 100, South Portland 83 and Cheverus 67.

Sam Rusak of Scarborough won three individual events – the open pole vault, junior 55 hurdles and junior high jump – and was on the winning 800-meter relay. He was named the outstanding junior meet performer.

“(The team title) feels really good. All the running and training paid off,” Rusak said. “We’re very balanced in the sprints, the hurdles, distances and field events.”

Rusak is the league record holder in the pole vault at 14 feet, 5 inches, set as a freshman last year. This year he won the pole vault at 14 feet, then missed three attempts at 14-9.

“I used a new pole at my last competition and it had a little too much bend this time,” he said.

Edward James of Scarborough placed second in the pole vault. Alex Dionne of the Red Storm was sixth. “We showed a lot of consistency for the most part,” said boys’ coach Derek Veilleux.

Veilleux mentioned Tim Carion’s third place in the junior high jump as unexpected points. Teammates Griffin Madden won the senior hurdles in a league-record 7.79 seconds and Hugh McSorley got a third in the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 8.5 inches.

Daniel Guiliani of South Portland won the shot put at 56-2. Nick White of Cheverus was second at 50-8.75.

Hany Ramadan of Deering was named the top performer in the open division. He won the 600 in a league-record 1:14.17 and the 200 in 22.85.

In the girls’ meet, the Red Storm got points in the junior shot put and both 800s that Coach Ron Kelly didn’t anticipate.

“It was a total team effort,” said Kelly.

Ellen Shaw of Scarborough won the junior hurdles in a league-record 8.76 seconds, finished second in the junior triple jump, third in the junior high jump and ran in the winning 800 relay. She was named the meet’s top performer in the junior division.

“We knew we could win it. We have such a strong team,” said Shaw. “I’m very happy with my meet. It’s more than I expected.”

Erin Ryan of Scarborough improved her throw by 4 feet to nab second in the junior shot put.

Tori Daigle of Thornton Academy set records in the long and triple jumps. Daigle jumped 18 feet, 8.5 inches in the long jump and 36 feet, 4.5 inches in the triple jump. She also won the senior 55 hurdles in 8.81 seconds.

“I’ve been trying to reach 18 feet in the long jump since last year’s state meet when I went 18 feet, 3 inches. This is my career best,” said Daigle, a senior who committed to Merrimack College in Andover, Mass.

“On my approach, I’m focused on my speed, height and distance. I like jumping here. It feels like home,” she said.

That’s good news for her. The Class A state meet also will be at USM on Feb. 16.

Daigle received the Angie Abraham Award as the MVP of the regular season and championship meets.

Matt Brady of Biddeford set a record in the junior shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 10.25 inches.

“I was just trying not to foul,” said Brady. “Last week at the Colby College Invitational I kept fouling.”

Other double winners in the boys’ meet were Tyler Joy of Noble in the senior 55 dash and senior long jump, and Keegan Fowler of Thornton Academy in the junior 55 and 400.

Other girls’ meet double winners were Katelyn Gendron of Cheverus in the junior long and triple jumps, and two Bonny Eagle runners – Elisabeth Redwood in the senior 200 and 400, and Kyaunna Libby in the senior 800 and open mile.
