FALMOUTH — Any scouting report on the Falmouth girls’ hockey team will note good depth and a high level of skill. Friday night, scouts likely added, “Can strike quickly.”
Top-ranked Falmouth scored twice in 29 seconds before it had played four minutes and went on to a 7-1 win over fifth-seeded Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland in a Western semifinal at Family Ice Center.
Falmouth (15-4) advanced to the regional final for the second straight year. The Yachtsmen will play No. 2 Scarborough on Wednesday at Lewiston.
Cape (8-11-1) reached the semifinals for the second straight year following a 3-2 quarterfinal win over No. 4 Biddeford on Wednesday night.
Sarah Hutcheon led the Yachtsmen with three goals. Evie Clement and Caroline Proctor each had a goal and an assist. Camden Carrier and Martina St. Angelo each had a goal. Abi Lebel had an assist.
“They start the first period very strong, very fast,” Falmouth Coach Rob Carrier said. “We felt we had to at least match if not surpass their intensity. The (first-round bye) really helped us; we had a little more jump in our step.”
Carrier put Falmouth up 1-0 at 3:06 when she snapped in a shot from a tough angle to the left of Cape goaltender Lily Jordan (six saves). The crowd had just stopped cheering the opening goal when Hutcheon scored what proved to be the winning goal at 3:35, again from a tight angle to the left of the Cape goal.
“You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take,” Hutcheon said. “I was taught to just put it on net because you never know, you can get a bounce and it can go in. And it did.”
Clement (8:29) scored from a scramble in front and Hutcheon (10:38) scored on Falmouth’s sole power play to go ahead 4-0 after the first period.
“They have a lot of depth that we can’t match,” Cape Coach Bob Mills said. “They’re deep at every position and we just couldn’t muster enough offensive power to get near their goalie.”
Cape was overmatched but not outworked.
Relying on just eight skaters, the Flyers appeared to ignore the scoreboard, hustling their way in to put pressure on Falmouth goalie Ally Hurdman (13 saves).
Hannah Bosworth gave the Flyers something to cheer when she broke in alone and scored just 22 seconds into the second period. Bosworth, Kathryn Clark, Allison Mills and Eliza Connolly made strong surges into the Falmouth zone, only to be stymied by the backchecking of centers Clement and Devon Sarazin.
“(Cape’s forwards) are really aggressive and they play with high intensity,” Sarazin said. “You have to match their intensity. We all know we have to get back and support (Hurdman), and have her face as few shots as possible.”
Hutcheon completed her hat trick at 3:40 of the second, and Proctor followed with a blast from the right point at 8:29 to make it 6-1. At that point, Jordan gave way to freshman Abby Joy (nine saves).
“It’s tough going into the third period down by six,” Mills said. “They played with heart right up to the end.”
In the third, St. Angelo closed out the scoring for the Yachtsmen, and backup goalie Mary Hyland (one save) came on for Hurdman.
“Come playoff time, you want them to be dialed in on the little things like backchecking,” Carrier said.
“Our seniors played in the state game as freshmen and most of these girls played in the regional final last year. They know it’s the little things that can swing a game.”
