Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at about 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday to West Gray Road in the town of Gray for a three-vehicle crash. No occupant was seriously injured.
The incident involved a 2003 Toyota Corolla operated by Ryler Vayo, 20, of Gray, a 2004 Honda Accord operated by Lorraine Hodges, 81, of Windham. Hodges was transported by Gray Fire & Rescue for a possible broken foot and her passenger, Franklin Hodges, had no injury. The third vehicle was a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser operated by Carol Kontos, 69, of Windham. Kontos, a former longtime state legislator who served in the 1990s and early 2000s, received minor injuries, and was not transported by rescue.
The accident occurred when Vayo, headed westbound on West Gray Road, crossed the center line and struck Hodges’ vehicle almost head on, according to sheriff’s Capt. Don Goulet. Kontos, who was following Hodges’ vehicle, was also struck by Vayo and forced into the guardrail.
Gray Fire & Rescue was assisted by New Gloucester Rescue. West Gray Road was shut down for about an hour while the vehicles were removed.
“Driver inattention on the part of the operator of (Vayo) was the cause of this crash,” said Goulet.
The accident remains under investigation and there are no criminal charges at this time.
