ARROWSIC — Thomas James Walsh, 76, of Arrowsic, formerly of Springfield, MA, died at home with his family at his bedside on Jan. 25, 2015, after a courageous 12-month battle with brain cancer. He was born on March 30, 1938, in Springfield, MA, son of Harold and Mary (Coughlin) Walsh. He grew up in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and attended schools in that area. As a youth, he spent time playing football for the Acorns and hanging out with friends.

In 1954, Tom went to work for the engineering department in Springfield, Mass., and in 1971 continued his service to the city as a firefighter. He was also a bartender and land surveyor. In 1989, when he retired to Maine, Tom returned to work surveying for the Department of Transportation in Maine. In 2000, he took a well-deserved retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Pelletier-Walsh of Arrowsic, and his five children, James Walsh and his family of Swampscott, MA, Debbie Monahan and her family of Marblehead, MA, Christine (Walsh) DeVoy and her family of Richmond, VA, Bonnie (Walsh) Apostolopoulos and her family of Mansfield, MA, and Kellie (Walsh) Placzek and her family of Woronoco, MA. He is also survived by a sister, Geraldine Biccum and her husband, Alvy Biccum of Cape Haze, FL. Tom was predeceased by his mother, Mary Coughlin Walsh, his father, Harold Walsh, and his sister, Nancy Sullivan.

Tom enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit, doing crossword puzzles and watching football. He was an avid Patriots fan. He also enjoyed spending time with his kids, vacationing in Ogunquit with his “cook-off” friends, and reading. Tom had a wonderful sense of humor and a tremendous joie-de-vive. He will be missed. He is a lifetime member of the Elks in Bath.

The family wishes to thank Brunswick Chans Hospice for their tender and compassionate care. A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 144 Lincoln St. in Bath.
