A great outlet for cabin fever is in store throughout the month of February in Freeport.
The theater group Freeport Players has worked with others in the town’s vibrant arts community to organize FebFest, an ambitious array of events meant to lure people out of their homes.
FebFest offers month-long events such as the Winter 2015 Art Exhibition at Thos. Moser Gallery, and the Art Guild of Freeport exhibit of mixed media by local artists at the Freeport Community Library. FreeportUSA also has a big hand in FebFest, sponsoring the eighth annual Flavors of Freeport on the weekend of Feb. 20-22. Many events are scheduled at the Freeport Community Center, First Parish Church Congregational and the Freeport Community Library, but many other venues will be part of the February celebration, too.
“It’s sort of a dead time after the holidays and before things get really going in Freeport in the spring,” said Elizabeth Guffey, who along with Gar Roper – both Freeport Players mainstays – planned FebFest.
“Gar and I had a talk last summer about doing something in February. Freeport Players had two events in February. We reached out to other groups to gauge interest. Just enough people said, ‘Great idea, we’ll do something.’ In just that space of six months we went from that to having something.”
The Freeport Players contributions to FebFest will come later in the month. On Feb. 13 at the Freeport Community Center, the group will perform A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters.” A staged reading of the new play, “To Have and To Hold,” a co-production with playwright Roper, is set for Feb. 19-20 at First Parish Church. A Cabaret night with Greater Freeport Community Chorus is set for Feb. 27-28 at Merriconeag Waldorf School.
The month-long Winter 2015 Art Exhibition Reception at Thos. Moser will feature Figures and Landscapes: Tina Ingraham and Kate Emlen.
FebFest gets under way with the free First Thursday film, “Love Actually,” a romantic comedy, on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the library, at 1 p.m. A Freeport First Fridays Just Desserts concert, featuring Tom Acousti and Friends, is on Feb. 6 at the Freeport Community Center. Doors open at 6:30, and the contribution is $5.
Guffey thinks FebFest will make Freeport an arts destination for the month. A $5,000 grant from the Davis Family Foundation is helping with publicity, promotions and administrative costs. Guffey has set up a website for FebFest events, freeportfebfest.com.
“We’ve attended quite a few events planning this in the last month,” Guffey said. “It’s something people are really looking for. It’s all of the arts – visual, performing, even culinary arts, and a wide range of all kinds of events, as well. There will be music, theater, art shows, photography exhibits, Flavors of Freeport. Some are free, some come with a charge. We’ve got the whole gamut, which I find so exciting.”
In addition to the cure for cabin fever, FebFest offers a little more incentive for attending the events. Those who do so can sign a sheet, and the people who attend the most events will receive free FebFest T-shirts.
“We’re actually just scratching the surface of what could go on in February,” Guffey said.
FreeportUSA also has done much planning for its signature February event, Flavors of Freeport. The annual Chef’s Signature Series & Ice Bar is Friday, Feb. 20, at the Hilton Garden Inn on Park Street. The cost is $25.
“Freeport’s best chefs showcase their best dishes, from 5-8 p.m.,” said Kelly Edwards, executive director of Freeport USA.
The Ice Bar is in the courtyard. There will be a martini luge and a DJ, for $15.
“There will be interactive ice sculptures, like a throne,” Edwards said. “There’s bonfires and the courtyard is decorated. It really looks beautiful.”
On Saturday, Feb. 21, the new Maine Distilling on Mill Street will offer a cocktail-making competition, at a time to be announced. Hilton Garden Inn will host a wine dinner on Saturday night.
Bow Street Market, Frosty’s Donuts, Fiore Artisan Olive Oils & Vinegars, Wilbur’s of Maine Chocolate Factory, Azure Cafe, Bridgham & Cook and Harraseeket Inn also will have events for Flavors of Freeport. Check the website freeportusa.com for details.
