Babbs Bridge, the covered bridge over the Presumpscot River between Windham and Gorham, has been shut down indefinitely.

The bridge, which connects Covered Bridge Road in Windham and Hurricane Road in Gorham, was damaged in a hit-and-run accident about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The bridge was built in 1843 and rebuilt in 1976.

Windham and Gorham Police said the damage occurred on the Windham side of the bridge. The Maine Department of Transportation is scheduled to inspect the damage Monday.

Police said the accident may have been caused by a snowplow. Anyone with information is asked to call Windham Police Detective Robert Hunt at 892-1919, extension 4421.
