Despite the cold, West Fest activities prove popular.

Westbrook’s Winter West festival was a hit Saturday with a family skate night and bonfire in Riverbank Park.

Maria Dorn, the director of Westbrook Community Services, said Saturday’s skate night was “amazing” and well organized.

Dorn said Westbrook Kiwanis Club members, who organized skate rentals for the event, were great supporters.

“It was cold, but there were tons of people,” she said, adding that it was so successful, a second skate night is being planned for Friday, Feb. 13, the same night as the snow-sculpting contest in the park.

Glacial Multimedia, along with local business owner and developer Rob Mitchell, the Westbrook Fire Department and Westbrook Public Services, sponsored the ice rink. The Dunn Street American Legion provided refreshments, such as hamburgers and hot cocoa, for families to enjoy.

Due to a lack of snow, and because many of last year’s events had to be canceled or postponed because of poor weather, organizers decided that this year’s Winter West festival would occur in installments, stretching through March.

On Saturday, Feb. 14, sled dog races, a craft fair and an animal adoption clinic will occur at Sunset Ridge Golf Links at 771 Cumberland St.

Then on Saturday, March 14, a St. Patrick’s Day 5K will take place in downtown Westbrook. For more information, see www.facebook.com/WinterWestFestival.
