Contrary to James Sanoski’s opening statement in his letter “ The U. S. A. — a Christian nation,” (Jan. 7) the United States was not “founded on Christian principles.”

Nowhere in the Constitution is Christianity established as the national religion of the United States; in fact, the Constitution of the United States expressly bans laws “respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

In short, the Constitution prohibits establishing the United States as Christian nation; it insists on a clear separation of church and state.

Mr. Sanoski should as well.
