Town OKs sale of 21 Main

The Gorham Town Council on Tuesday approved 5-2 (Bruce Roullard and Sherrie Benner opposed) selling town-owned property at 21 Main St. to Dominic Reali Realty, doing business as Amato’s, for $155,000.

The historic house and its lot are adjacent to Amato’s Sandwich Shop at 3 Main St.

With an eye on providing more downtown parking, the town bought the property in 2012 for $169,900. In selling it, the town loses $15,000.

The council rejected an amendment proposed by Roullard that would have prevented the house from being razed or moved.

Catherine Mossman, a southern Maine resident, will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, in the continuing monthly series “Potluck With a Purpose,” at South Gorham Baptist Church on County Road.

Mossman’s topic is sex trafficking.

“Lured by desperation and by other girls who had been trafficked by local Portland pimps, Catherine was held against her will and forced into prostitution by age 15,” said Cindy Elder, who organizes the church’s series of monthly meetings.

Mossman’s background, Elder said, includes both sexual abuse and sex trafficking.

“She was molested at age 6 and became a runaway by age 12,” Elder said “Following debilitating PTSD resulting from this abuse, Catherine has worked through years of healing and recovery. She currently volunteers at Long Creek Youth Center in South Portland and now shares her own story to bring attention to the issue of child molestation, bullying, and sex trafficking. Catherine will offer the Potluck With a Purpose audience concrete ways to protect and educate our own children.”

Those attending are asked to take food to share for the potluck meal. The snow date for the meeting is Friday, Jan. 23.
