WESTBROOK – The Westbrook City Council approved the appointment of Angela Holmes as the new city clerk Monday.
She replaces Lynda Adams, who will have a send-off party Thursday. Adams held the job for six years.
With a unanimous vote Monday, the council appointed Holmes, who has had four years’ experience as city clerk in Binghamton, N.Y.
Adams announced her resignation in early November, and said last week that she is moving into the private sector. She has been building a business part time for about a year. The home-based business, part of a national company called ACN, offers clients alternative sources for services such as electricity, telephones and natural gas.
In addition to her work as city clerk, Adams has been involved in planning multiple community events, including BikeMaine 2014. Most recently, Adams led the city’s bicentennial committee in organizing events in June, as well as putting together a new time capsule.
According to City Administrator Jerre Bryant’s City Council memo, the city received more than 35 applications and interviewed eight applicants for the job.
In her resume, Holmes, 26, said she recently relocated from Binghamton to Portland with her husband. Prior to serving as city clerk in Binghamton for four years, Holmes was also the deputy city clerk for two years. Binghamton, near the Pennsylvania border, has a population of 47, 376, according to the 2010 census.
Mayor Colleen Hilton said Monday that the initial field of eight candidates was strong.
“These were highly qualified, competent people,” she said. “It was a really tough slate of candidates. We’re really pleased to have Angela joining us.” The city clerk’s salary is $59,917.
Following her appointment, Holmes said she’s excited to get started in Westbrook.
“I look forward to working with the city of Westbrook,” she said. “I know everyone’s sad to see (Adams) go. I’ve got some big shoes to fill.”
She added that prior to Adams’ last day, she’d be shadowing her at City Hall.
“I’m looking forward to gaining as much information from her as possible before she heads out,” Holmes said.
A party in honor of the outgoing Adams will be held this Thursday, Dec. 18, beginning after 3 p.m. at Profenno’s in Westbrook.
