The indoor track season got under way this past week, and high school athletes from across southern Maine had the run of Costello Sports Complex on the University of Southern Maine’s Gorham campus for much of Saturday. The mid-afternoon meet belonged to Westbrook, Scarborough, Gorham and Bonny Eagle, and on the girls’ side of things, the Blue Blazes held the edge, while on the boys’ front, the Red Storm reigned supreme.
Westbrook’s Courtney Arsenault and Scarborough’s Sam Rusak won first place overall in the Junior Girls and Boys Divisions, respectively, while Red Stormer Sarah Rinaldi and Blue Blaze Maurice Johnson grabbed the Senior titles.
“I’m pleased,” said Ron Kelly, Scarborough girls head coach. “It’s good to have a meet, find out where kids are at…so we can gauge their training the rest of the year.
“Westbrook, realistically, is probably the team to beat in the league. They’re able to cover a lot of the races.
“It’s what you do at the end of the year that matters, not the beginning. We’re rebuilding – we’ve still got a young team. I’m very pleased with the freshman class.”
