University of Southern Maine officials plan to meet with a member of the music faculty arrested last week on child pornography charges.
Micah Maurio, 28, of Gorham was charged with dissemination of sexually explicit material of someone under the age of 12, according to a report by Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland on Dec. 5.
The university has suspended Maurio from teaching. A court date has been set for Tuesday, Feb. 24, a spokeswoman at Cumberland County Court in Portland said on Tuesday.
“Micah Maurio has been suspended, without pay, pending a decision on his continued employment with the University of Southern Maine,” university spokesman Christopher Quint said in a statement.
The university plans to interview Maurio. But, Quint said on Tuesday, a time and date had not been set to meet with Maurio. The university is required to abide by a union contract, according to Quint.
McCausland reported that Maurio was arrested at his apartment at 132 Gray Road in Gorham and taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland. Sgt. Michael Nault of Gorham Police Department assisted in the arrest at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 5 and took Maurio to the county jail.
A spokesman at the jail on Tuesday, when asked whether the suspect was still in custody, replied only that it did not have him.
Last week, police seized Maurio’s computer.
“An initial review of his personal computer showed hundreds of images of child pornography,” McCausland reported.
But, McCausland said, none of the children depicted are believed to be from Maine. McCausland said Maurio has been under investigation by the computer crimes unit since October following a tip.
The university’s website indicated that Maurio was a faculty member of the School of Music, based in Corthell Hall on the Gorham campus. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the university in 2008 and a master’s degree at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2013.
The website said Maurio is a native of Caribou.
