1 Falmouth: No team has won three straight Class A titles in 30 years, but the Yachtsmen have the depth and talent to pull off the feat this winter. Falmouth lost All-State goalie Dane Paul to graduation but brings back 15 players. Yarmouth Coach David St. Pierre said, “Falmouth is the best team … maybe even stronger than last year’s state championship team.”

2 Biddeford: Coach Rich Reissfelder described his Tigers as a “young but talented team.” Biddeford has only three seniors, but all three were Class A All-West selections. And the underclassmen are pretty good. The defense looks strong.

3 Scarborough: The Red Storm reached the Western Class A final last year, but “we lost a lot, both up front and on defense,” said Coach Norm Gagne. “We have a group of sophomores who have big roles to fill.” The Red Storm still will be a favorite to at least reach the regional semifinals.

4 Cheverus: The Stags went 9-9-1 with a tough schedule last year but return nine of their top 10 forwards and five of their six best defensemen. New starting goalie Kyle Severance looked solid in a season-opening 3-2 overtime win against Lewiston.

5 Yarmouth: Despite a lopsided loss to Falmouth in their opener, the Clippers could be the best team in Western Class B, “but there are six, seven teams that will have a legitimate shot,” Coach David St. Pierre said. The Clippers have more depth and experience than they’ve had in years.
