Boys Basketball
Coach: Kevin Millington
Last year’s record: 6-13
Key players: Kevin Weisser (sr., G); Markus D’Andrea (sr., G); Troy Davis (sr., G); Ryan Gorman (sr., G); Jack Giampino (sr., F); Greg Gledhill (sr., F); Kyle Kilfoil (jr., F)
Key games: Cheverus
Outlook: “We have senior leadership, all five starters returning,” Millington says, “so we are optimistic for a good season…The league is wide open this year, with 10 or so teams close in talent.”
Girls Basketball
Coach: Brody Artes (third year)
Last year’s record: 14-8 (lost to McAuley in Western A Regional Final)
Key players: Sadie Nelson, Luisa Sbardella, Katie Herzig, Mya Mannette, Ciera Berthiaume, Lyndsey Arsenault, Macy Manette
Key games: Cheverus, Marshwood, Scarborough, McAuley, South Portland, Deering, Westbrook
Outlook: The Lady Eagles turned heads last season, emerging in the tournament as a dark horse and advancing all the way to the Western Maine Final, where they held their own against powerhouses McAuley for a lengthy stretch. Four seniors are gone from that squad, including three starters, so the team will be looking to regroup this year. They have the talent to do so, though. Nelson will lead the offense, and likely improve on her 15.3 ppg from 2013-’14, fourth-best in the SMAA. Sbardella, Herzig and Mannette will work the ball up and down the court, while Berthiaume is a defensive asset. “If the Lady Eagles can score consistently in transition, it should be a fun team to watch and a successful year overall,” says Artes.
Boys Hockey
Coach: Greg Leclair
Last year’s record: 6-11-1
Key players: Clayton Owens (sr., G); Zack Callahan (jr., F/D); Tyler Johnson (jr., F); Gage Chenard (jr., F); Drew Bernier (sr., D)
Key games: Gray-New Gloucester/Poland/Oak Hill, Marshwood/Traip, South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport, Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills
Outlook: Leclair is confident his boys will post an improved record over last year, “despite a more challenging schedule.” Five of the Eagles’ 11 losses in the 2013-’14 stretch were by a single goal, and most of that team’s scoring nucleus – six of seven top goal-getters – return for 2014-’15. Leclair also envisions his defense solidifying, and notes that Owens has plenty of varsity experience now between the pipes. “A playoff berth is not outside the realm of possibility,” Leclair says, “but we’ll need to surprise a couple to do it.”
Alpine Skiing
Coaches: Gavin Glider (head), Jennie Butler (asst.)
Last year’s record: Boys ninth at States, girls 11th (of 14)
Key athletes: Jordan Crowley, Kyle Joseph
Outlook: “We have a much smaller team than last year,” says Glider. “That being said, we will take the hill and ski our hardest.”
Swimming & Diving
Coach: Peter Small
Last year’s record: Boys 7-3, girls 3-7
Key athletes: Joe Pluso, John Giberti, Josh Labrecque, Sam Shoberg, Lyle Webster, Maelah Nadeau, Bryanna Power, Colby Nadeau, Olivia Verrill, Taylor Colangelo
Key meets: Yarmouth, Kennebunk, Massbaseic
Outlook: The Windham boys finished strong last year, and look to build on that success in the coming months. Matchups with rivals Kennebunk and Massabesic will provide competitive experience. On the girls’ side, graduation claimed some talented veterans, but the incoming group – including new athletes from other sports – promises to replenish the pool, as it were. “The team has set lofty goals for itself and should improve upon its postseason finish from a year ago,” says Small. “As always, it will come down to how the athletes develop during the course of the year.”
Boys Indoor Track
Coach: Paula Pock
Key athletes: Jeremy Bennett, Reese Preston, Aaron Graves, Eric Webb, Hawar Haddadi, Kyle Mandel, Thomas Sappier, Ernie Ruby
Key meets: “All meets are really important,” says Pock, adding, “but we always enjoy competing against Westbrook, Bonny Eagle and Gorham.”
Outlook: The Eagles’ goal is, like any track team’s, to qualify as many athletes in the regular season as possible for the State meet in February. “We have a lot of young athletes,” Pock says, “and returning athletes, who’ll be expected to take leadership roles and perform big in meets.”
Girls Indoor Track
Coaches: Scott Rush-Donohue (head), Christine Cyr (asst.)
Last year’s record: 12-8 regular season, 21 girls to Conference Championships, 12 to Class A States; broke 11 school records
Key athletes: Alexis Wintle, Mattison Marcello, Joelle Bockus, Alana Cobb, Alexis Lewis, McKenzie Pepin, Madhuri Leslie, Maura Gallagher, Julia Preston, Amanda Turner, Meghan Knights
Key meets: SMAAs, States
Outlook: “We have a smaller and younger squad this year,” says Rush-Donohue, “and it may not produce a large number of regular-season wins against bigger teams, but we should see approximately the same number representing us at the state championships, where we finished 11th of the 25 teams last year.” Wintle is the defending State Champion in High Jump, and is surrounded by contenders in other events. Rush-Donohue emphasizes as well the importance of his sprint and distance relay squads.
Wrestling
Coach: Jason Dryburgh
Last year’s record: 9-9
Key athletes: Dominick Cancelarich (sr., 145); Brandon Huntington (sr., 138); TJ Kenney (sr., 152); Jesse Mailer (sr., 126); Ethan Wind (jr., 132-138); Sebastian Foster (so.); Sean Butterworth (so.)
Outlook: Windham is struggling with low numbers this year, and faces a tough schedule. However, Dryburgh is optimistic. “The team is driven,” he says, “by four senior captains who each know what it takes to win on and off the mat.” Dryburgh happily reports that his wrestlers – newcomers and veterans alike – are investing ever more effort and developing a new mindset. “By placing effort, attitude and execution as the top priority everyday, the team is equipped with the tools to take on all challenges and challengers and be successful.”
